I am long time insomniac but lately it has become worse. I complained to someone at work and they said that exercise is not good before bed. I have heard that exercise does help you sleep so I am confused
I do jumping jacks, push ups and situps before bed. I make a point of exercising until just before I start sweating. So which is correct? Should I exercise or not?
Exercise is good for promoting sleep but, but you need to do it at least 4-6 hours before going to bed. The problem is that exercise increases your body temperature and your metabolism. This will make you more awake and less able to sleep.
If you want to get the goods from exercise, you should be doing cardio to really get the heart pumping and make you sweat. Then at night you will have real good luck sleeping well.
I do exercise about 2 hours before bed time and when its time for bed I'm completly worn out and ready. I think it helps me, it doesn't pump me up like one might think. I don't know if its just me though.
Also, it doesn't count as "exercise", but meditation can be extremely effective in helping relax and unwind before sleep. It helps empty your mind and relax your body.
The only type of exercise I would recommend before bed is yoga or a very mild walk. Anything that significantly elevates your heart-rate is only going to make it more difficult to sleep. I think exercising in the early evening would be the latest I would push it.
I would do Insanity right before bed, but it kept me pumped up and I wouldn't sleep at all. I think it was because I had a runner's high and my body was feeling good from all of the activity. But if I went for a walk for an hour then I would get exhausted.
Exercise, especially cardio exercise boosts the metabolic rate, gets the blood pumping and perks you up. This is not good for sleeping. Exercise earlier in the day can help to tire you out and can let you sleep better. If you do want to do something before bed, go for a short walk outside. The cool air and the dim light can be triggers to the body that will induce sleep. Just make sure it is a slow walk and not a jog.
I haven't tried it yet, but I guess this is not advisable. The previous posts were correct, it might even get you pumped up and hyper. Of course, that wouldn't surely get you to sleep. I suggest that you keep yourself busy and physically engaged during the day. It might help, give it a try.
