When I think of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder I immediately think of war and those affected it. I got to reading more on the subject and found that there are so many other less mentioned causes of the condition.
Other known causes include natural disasters, rape, kidnapping, terrorist attacks, sudden death of loved ones, assault, sexual or physical abuse and child neglect.
An earth shattering event can also leave you feeling hopeless and helpless leading to PTSD.
I was diagnosed with depression twelve years ago. Once during multiple sessions with my therapist, I was asked hundreds of questions. It turns out all of those terrible and terrifying experiences can add up to Post Trauma issues of trying to get through a stressful existence. For example, surviving rape, attempted rape, being a victim of criminal acts, witnessing criminal acts, car crashes, continuing to live in a super violent community in which one witnesses violence perpetrated upon family members are all reasons for experiencing post trauma psychological challenges. The human brain can only process so much.
I was diagnosed with PTSD a couple years after I left my sons bio dad who abused me and left me for dead in a ditch with our infant son. I was so concerned with that diagnosis because I knew that people wouldn't understand, hey I didn't even understand. I always assumed PTSD was associated with war, but it has to do with any trauma and you're right it can steam from any number of things. I found that I am so much better with treatment and know that I am a better person because I chose to seek help. A lot of people don't and end up living their lives a slave to PTSD. I believe that the more people are aware that PTSD is real and not just war related, the more people will step forward to get the help they need.
