I only found out that I have osteoarthritis last week when I went in to visit my doctor after he sent me for for imaging. I had had really bad hip pain for 3 weeks after I went on a long hike. It turns out I have a stress fracture in my hip from the OA so I am on crutches now. He sent me home and is calling me in again next week to tell me my options. Now I am wondering what are the possible ways to treat this?
Sorry, but I don't think anyone can honestly say how it would be treated. People will have different experiences depending on how bad the fracture is. I think it ranges from rest and medications to pins in the bone. That is my untrained answer based on reading forums. I would just suggest that you do what you can to keep the weight off of it.
That's fair. I appreciate your attempt to answer. Any information is more than what I have. I had no previous illness to speak of so I was quite surprised by the diagnosis. Regarding keeping the weight off the hip, I am doing my best. Any weight on it just brings tears to my eyes from the pain.
This isn't meant to be rude or prying at all but do you have excess weight? I am guessing you don't because doing long hikes makes it sound like you are fit. If you do have excess weight losing it, will help to reduce the stress on the joint.
That is tough. All your efforts to do the right thing and the gods crush your attempts! I hope that the break can just be handled with some rest and/or medications. Take care and let us know how you fare.
When I was younger, I lost weight by drinking a lot of water. You go to the bathroom a lot, but the weight comes off. Cut down on the salt, intake and eat less bread. Eat bananas and every now and then take a potassium pill, as you lose potassium when going to the bathroom. Good luck.
artistry, thanks for the suggestion. I have to do something to take the strain off my hips!
You are welcome, but be patient with yourself. I do mild exercies before I get out of bed. Swinging my arms, bending my knees, with my feet flat on the bed, and puting my knees together back and forth. Do nothing strenuous, if there is any pain, stop and lay there for a while before you get up or start a different exercise. Good luck.
