Combatting effects of PTSD

For those who have PTSD, can you tell when you experience a trigger? If so what do you do to deal with that trigger.

For me whenever I feel like I do not have control of a situation I feel triggered. Realizing that it is just a trigger helps a little bit, but I would love more tricks.

Over time you will become aware of the 'trigger' and learn how to respond to it. Responding to the trigger positively is a key part in the process of overcoming Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. By becoming aware of the triggers, you can avoid them and learn to deal with it better.

It's good that you already identified the situations that cause a trigger. That's the first step in coping with PTSD. Ways of coping with PTSD include deep breathing, relaxation, mindfulness, expressive writing, and talking with your friends or family.

Working with a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy specialist can assist with this process. You need to reconfigure your thoughts and trying to do this on your own without professional advice can be difficult if you don
t have an understanding of CBT.

What does anyone think of incorporating meditation into your means and methods of dealing with PTSD? Meditation may help to reduce stress, which may then in turn, help reduce incidences of PTSD.

Meditation can definitely reduce the stress and anxiety involved with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Meditation will help anyone, even if they do not suffer from any mental help problems, it will help prevent mental problems developing in the future.

I know when I am having a trigger because as soon as the experience/experiences creep into my head, my mood very suddenly changes. My mind and heart will begin to race and if I do not prevent myself from letting myself get too deep into the thoughts or memories I will have a full blown panic attack. As long as I try to avoid the memories, and quickly swat them away from my mind when they arise, I will be ok. Every now and then I do talk about it with someone close though just to let it out if I feel I've been bottling it up for too long.
