Does anyone have favorite foods that help you control your blood sugar levels through diet? Some of mine include the Kashi granola bars and cereal products which usually have no high fructose corn syrup.

Well eating certain kinds of vegetables can lower sugar levels. Bitter gourd is one vegetable that has been proven by studies that it does lower sugar levels but it taste too bitter for most to consume.

Oddly enough, my mother's doctor once told her to eat sweet potatoes instead of red or white potatoes. He said they had fewer starches that your body could convert to sugar. She started eating sweet potato fries and mashed sweet potato. This became her favorite side dish.

My mother has found that oatmeal and long grain wheat rice have helped her cravings and have not spiked her levels. She also found that she eats more meat and veggies, almost Atkins like but without the heavy fat. By doing this she is able to have only low doses of insulin and at one point she was able to go off of it! Of course we all know how hard it is to maintain a diet free of today
s processed goodies so its a constant battle.

Oatmeal is one of the best things for controlling blood sugar levels and keeping the heart healthy. Recent research suggests that cinnamon also helps to stabilise blood sugar levels, so a dish of unsweetened oatmeal sprinkled with cinnamon would make a healthy, filling and tasty breakfast. Green vegetables such as green beans, broccoli and spinach are high in fibre and low in carbohydrate, so they can be very helpful.
