sensitive even to IBS foods

I tried asking by gastroenterologist because I am having sensitivity to far too many foods. He really didn't have much to offer me. I can't even eat many of those that are on the IBS 'safe' food list. Much of the food I eat gives me diarrhea.

Since my GP failed me, I am wondering if some plain old personal experience can help. Do any of you have IBS even with these safe foods? What do you do to make it more tolerable?

The IBS sensitivities do seem to vary by person so if you aren't keeping a food diary you should be. Then you can see if specific foods are the problem.

Personally, I have found that I cannot eat fats like butter and oils. I can't eat onions, garlic or broccoli. Peanuts are bad and any milk product is completely dangerous to me. It also changes somewhat over time, at least in my case.

By controlling what I eat rigorously I have gained much more control than I once had.

I admit I haven't really used a diary. Since I was diagnosed 2 years ago, I was eating IBS safe foods. They seemed to work a bit for the first 6 months but failed afterwards. If the IBS foods aren't working for me, should I limit myself to only those from the list or should I try other foods too? I am worried that if I only eat the IBS safe ones that I will be completely undernourished!

If you are having no luck with those foods, try some others, but as bill_c said, its good to keep a journal. It may that you are not as sensitive to all the foods as you think you are because something common is causing more of the problems. Also be aware of foods that contain trace amounts of triggering foods. If you are buying anything prepared, it can be very tough to protect yourself. Many people find that they try to make most of their meals themselves.

I would definitely recommend trying foods one by one to see if you can expand your diet. If you follow the diary, you should be able to decide what is working.

I guess a diary it is... While I am tring to decipher my diet, is there something I can take to slow things down? My GP said that there are no safe medication to do that right now. I would really like to get some control.

Two things that some people seem to have success with are probiotic capsules and calcium supplements. My understanding is that the calcium pulls moisture from the intestines. It also reduces inflammation. The probiotics work to restore the bacterial balance.

You did not tell us what foods you are actually eating so it
s hard to give advice. My general view is that we should eat whole natural food and try to cut out neolithic foods which we have been eating for the past 10,000 years, our bodies have not adapted to these foods and are the main culprit in my opinion.
