Do you think root canal is safe for children?

I took my younger child to a clinic. The digital x-ray results revealed that he had three cavities, including two in his molars. The situation is really terrible such that they couldn't simply be filled. The dentist doesn't want to pull the tooth.  Instead, she recommended root canal treatment. I was too late in taking my son to a dental clinic.

The dentist recommended that root canal treatment is the only way of saving a tooth with such bacterial infection and inflammation. If left untreated, the infection may also spread downwards and affect the developing permanent tooth. Are root canals safe for children? The pain is severe now and his eating habits have been affected terribly. Please help me with your valuable suggestions!
