Back pain is the occurrence of mild discomfort to severe pain in the upper, lower or middle areas of the spine with discomfort occurring anywhere from the area of the neck down to the hips and buttocks. In some cases, back pain can even be felt in other parts of the body such as the thighs or even the toes. Such back pain can originate from a number of causes including improper lifting, sports injuries, accidents and poor posture.

When untreated, back pain can restrict the victim’s abilities and render that person incapacitated and unable to perform work duties. Some individuals will only experience the pain for a day or two. But, in cases where the pain becomes unbearable and leads to disruption of one’s normal daily activities it becomes important for those suffering from back pain to contact a physician as quickly as possible.

Options For The Relief Of Chronic Back Pain

Once a person has sought medical assistance for their back pain, there are several courses of action possible to relieve their pain. Many doctors will prescribe medications to patients suffering from such pain. Items such as muscle relaxants and painkillers can block the discomfort and pain but do so temporarily. However, most people would like to see long lasting results from any back pain treatment.

For this reason, exercising is an excellent choice for long-term results. However, other options also provide relief. Acupuncture is one such source of treatment that patients will also seek and involves the use of needles to relieve pain. The theory is that such needles work by making contact with special points in the body that relieve tension. Many patients credit acupuncture for the relief of their pain. However, the most common relief for chronic back pain is chiropractic care.
