Premature Menopause Increases The Risks For Aneurysms

One last significant effect on health that was also reported this year is the risk for aneurysms faced by women who undergo early menopause. In a study from Rush University Medical Center, researchers identified that women who experienced menopause before age 40 were 36% more likely to suffer an aneurysm in the brain. An aneurysm is a stretching of a blood vessel that makes the blood vessel prone to rupture and internal bleeding. Roughly 50% of people who experience a ruptured aneurysm will die.

The good news was that the researchers also found that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) reduced the risks of an aneurysm by 77%.

Conclusions

While menopause and the related end to female fertility are a natural part of the aging process, premature menopause is neither natural nor healthy. However, both prevention of early menopause and treatment with hormone replacements are reasonably effective means of reducing the health risks associated with early menopause. The important part is being aware of these increased risks to health in order to take appropriate action.
