Acid Reflux Now Waking Me Up

Two years ago when I started having bad heartburn, I went to a doctor. I was told I had GERD. Since then, I have been taking different PPIs with little effect. I also worked to change my diet by reducing the fats and spices that might aggrevate the problem. I don't eat anything in the evening to prevent reflux. I also sleep on an inclined pillow. Despite this, I am constantly getting bad reflux that wakes me.

I wake up coughing with a sour taste in my mouth and the acid burning my throat. Sometimes I cough so hard that I can't even fall asleep again. I would appreciate ideas from anyone.

I can't say what to do exactly because it sounds like doctor have been trying to help, but you probably need to have a little more in your stomach in the early evening. If your stomach has nothing to work on, the acid is going to be worse and in your case could be coming up your throat as you sleep. Just my 2 cents...

I was told not to eat too close to bedtime by my doctor. I don't think having food in there is a good idea.

Sorry, I don't know from your post how close to bed you make sure your stomach is empty. You don't want to eat within 2 hours of bedtime, but before that a snack can reduce the acid. Anyway, that was my only idea.

One other thing that comes to mind. Have you had ulcers or been checked for gastritis? If you visited a doctor, they would probably check. You might have a H. pylori infection in the stomach. If you do, it might explain why the medications don't help much.

RE: Acid Reflux Now Waking Me Up

My doctor never said he was looking for any infections. I never asked many questions. I haven't been back in almost a year. He has just been refilling prescriptions when I call. I guess I am due for a visit. Thanks for the help.
