is rheumatoid arthritis genetic?

Hello,

I am new to the forums. I apologize if I am asking a question that has already been asked. I have had RA for 1 year I am trying to find out whether RA is genetic or whether it is caused by the environment. I can't seem to find a straight forward answer and it's making me frustrated. I am trying to find out if it is something that you can pass on to your children. Does anyone have any information on this?

RE: is rheumatoid arthritis genetic?

I think that RA is definitely genetic because it runs in families. Of course, who it affects is not simple to predict. I have it and my aunt has it but nobody else does. I have met people who have 3 generations in their family with the disease. One thing that is well known is that it is far more common for women than men.

Do you know the odds of passing it along? Is it something anybody has studied?

RE: is rheumatoid arthritis genetic?

In my opinion, there is no good answer at this time. It depends with whom you discuss the topic. Some people believe that rheumatoid arthritis is caused by environmental exposure to chemicals, some people believe it is caused by exposure to viruses, while other people believe it is genetic. I think that it might be combination where your genetics make you susceptible and then another factor triggers it.

RE: is rheumatoid arthritis genetic?

Here are some links. Hopefully they provide you more of what you are seeking. I do not think you will have good luck determining the exact odds, however.

If you are really interested, you can look for genetic testing companies to analyze the risks of passing along the disease. I am not sure how accurate they are. You would have to be very cautious.

RE: is rheumatoid arthritis genetic?

Thank you for this. I am trying to get enough information to decide whether or not to have children. I do not wish to pass this condition on to my children. Knowingly doing it would be pretty selfish in my opinion.
