blood pressure increasing again, what to do?

I had HBP three years ago but I reduced my salt and started exercising regularly. I checked my BP everyday until I was doing fine for months. Then I started checking only once a month because nothing was changing. It was good until at least two months agao when I last checked. I measured my BP today and I am at 145/90. Now I am super concerned. I called and booked an appointment with my doctor but that's not until late next week.

I am now wondering what I can do in the mean time. I know I am worrying but my mother had 2 strokes from her HBP.

RE: blood pressure increasing again, what to do?

It sounds like you may have diet and exercise covered unless you have been taking a vacation on these. Have you been strict in adhering to both? Also, consider if you have been consuming more alcohol than normal. Alcohol raises the top number or systolic (in your case 145).

The last thing I can suggest is looking at the supplements that are available for blood pressure management. You could start these straight away. Once you go to the doctor, make you to tell them that you are on these.

Hopefully something here is helpful.

Only your systolic is high at this point and it only puts you in the mild stage 1 form of the condition. If you have been good for the majority of the last three years, you shouldn't worry too much for the next week. You are not at really high risk right now.

Thanks for the information and the reality check. I was on vacation and drinking more than normal so that might be the crux of the problem. My diet was reasonable and I exerecised every day so that shouldn't be it. I'll look at the supplements but may delay until I visit my doctor.

Just wanted to add that your numbers are better than mine after the medications. My doctor has said I am not at much risk this way. He is still giving me steps to reduce it more anyway.

Alcohol can send up the blood pressure reading, but it drops back down within a few days of getting back to normal. It doesn't sound as if it's unreasonably high - mine is higher than that on medication, and I have a history of heart problems on both sides of the family. It's good that you're keeping an eye on things, though.

RE: blood pressure increasing again, what to do?

Well you did the right thing in making an appointment to see your doctor. Its a good possibility the medication you are currently on for your blood pressure is no longer working effectively. Nothing to be alarmed about this does happen, I know that it happened to me with my blood pressure issues. The best advice is to continue to stay true to your diet and exercise. Make sure to avoid salt, and don't consume alcohol as others have said.

RE: blood pressure increasing again, what to do?

Here is a simple step you can add to your routine to help lower your blood pressure. Breathing slowly and deeply believe it or not can help lower your blood pressure. Breathing slowly or practicing meditation 5 minutes in the morning and evening can decrease stress hormones. These hormones elevate an enzyme in one's kidneys called renin which raises blood pressure. So exhaling and releasing your tension can definitely help lower your BP.
