natural alternatives to high blood pressure meds?

I was recently diagnosed with hypertension and my doctor is trying to put me on blood pressure medications. I don't want to take them.
I have never trusted the pharmaceutical companies. They just create the drugs to make money.

I am changing my diet, exercising more and looking for natural alternatives to the stuff being pushed by the drug companies. Anyone have suggestions?

You really shouldn't dismiss the drugs outright. You can use these drugs while searching for natural ones that help. Then try phasing one out and the other in to see if it works for you. Just like the medications, a natural one might not work for you. It's better to be cautious.

I am just on the border of needing medications so I can afford to not take the drug company concoctions. But thanks anyway.

RE: natural alternatives to high blood pressure meds?

My reading on the naturals keeps coming up with products containing hawthorn and garlic. I don't know if they work, but that is what I read. The other thing to try is fish oil. I use the garlic and the fish oil only. My BP is mostly under control so I don't know whether the drugs work on their own or whether the naturals help also.

Thanks for the reply. I won't touch the fish oil. The fishers just grind up the by-catch and try to pass it off as a product. Its not sustainable to the environment to be making. Thanks for the hawthorn and garlic options. I will read about them.

RE: natural alternatives to high blood pressure meds?

Celery, garlic and onions can all help reduce blood pressure, so use them as often as possible. You don't need to take fish oils to benefit from Omega-3 - just eat at least two servings of oily fish such as tuna, salmon, sardines and mackerel each week. Cut down on saturated fats by reducing your consumption of red meat, and switch to olive oil for cooking and salad dressings, etc. Extra virgin first cold pressing is the healthiest oil, as it's the least processed. Also, cut right down on processed foods. These often contain lots of salt, which is not good when you have hypertension.
