Migraines and Stroke
I had a scare in the past few weeks because my brother recently had a stroke. We were at his place just finishing dinner when he started making little sense in what he was saying. I knew that something was not right so we took him as quickly as possible to the hospital. The emergency room doctor said he was having a stroke and sent him for a scan. He was bleeding into the brain so they had to perform immediate surgery. Fortunately he survived, but he has weakness in his arm that may be permanent.
He is only 49 so it is was shocking and very stressful. I almost cried a few times and most things don't get to me. The whole situation has me worried for my brother and for myself as I too have migraines. I've read about the connection between migraines and strokes and I am very worried about being around for my wife and children.
I am not really asking any questions. I am just worried about the bomb that might be in my head and needed to vent my frustrations. No use stressing my wife out any more than needed.

So sorry for your family, man. That is awful. I think I can imagine your stress and worries. Any time you need to vent, just throw it out here. I know the docs can't prevent such things, but maybe they need to check you for aneurisms (sp?) or something regularly. It's not for sure, but may be able to treat. I would fight the unknown.

RE: Migraines and Stroke
I haven't ever seen anything that says meditation will help with migraines or very bad headaches. In the case of migraines, standard pain medications don't even work because they target the wrong places instead of the brain where the migraine is actually located. If you are writing about medications, you really should be reading more about medical science in my opinion.

RE: Migraines and Stroke
Sorry to hear about your brother. I understand how seeing this would make you worry about your own health and migraine history. I too suffer migraines, almost weekly. Doctors have told me that on MRI scans you can clearly see a dark spot where head trauma from an abusive ex may be the cause. Its certainly scary. All you can really do is try and treat your migraines according to your doctor's orders and take a good daily multi-vitamin.

RE: Migraines and Stroke
It's sad. Although, there are studies linked between migraine and stroke but still the answer is unknown. Fear is not an answer but instead consult a practitioner to know the problem. I sometimes have migraines but I know this is because of my vision. I just hope everything went well for you. No need to panic.

RE: Migraines and Stroke
This has worried me in the past two. I once had a migraine so intense that the left side of my body went numb, to the point where my left eye was drooping shut and I couldn't lift my hand. I had no head pain or other systems and I couldn't breathe properly. At the emergency room they didn't take it very seriously, but after all the tests they proved it was a migraine.

RE: Migraines and Stroke
You should go and get an MRI if you have that severity of migraines. An friend of friend died from a subarachnoid hemorrhage after many years of migraine headaches. Its totally scary like sabotage in your own head.

RE: Migraines and Stroke
I also suffer from migraines, but not nearly as often as I used to. I have found that when I make an solid effort to de-stress on a regular basis, my migraines occur a lot less often. On the other hand, when I am extremely stressed, the occur much more often. In my opinion, and I have not studied up on this so it is strictly my opinion based on my own experiences, stress, and the rise in blood pressure that occurs when a person is stressed a lot plays a role in how often and how severe migraines can be. That being said, blood pressure also plays a role in a person having a stroke...this I know from working in a nursing home and discussing it with several nurses. So, my opinion is that the key to having less migraines and at the very least, less severe migraines, and lowering the risk of having a stroke is to find ways to relax regularly and to let go of at least some of those things that are constantly weighing on your mind.
