Eating Disorders on the increase?

Eating Disorders, Anorexia, Bulimia, EDNOS, Binge eating and many sub types have seemingly gained momentum in their development over the last two decades. I am aware that we might be better placed to detect and talk about these issues these days, but this does not explain the huge increase in all of the various eating disorders that we are now seeing. Research is continually being conducted to look at the theories around why some people develop eating disorders and therefore what types of treatment are most beneficial but we are far from solving the dilemma of a growing population of both males and females, some incredibly young that are suffering long standing eating disorders which threaten their physical health and psychological well-being. More eating disorders services are appearing to help and support these individuals and families, however services are not able to keep up with the demand of this ever increasing problem.

RE: Eating Disorders on the increase?

There are many misconceptions in our society about what causes eating disorders. Eating disorders are rarely about food or wanting to be thin. Instead, sufferers use food and unhealthy behaviors like dieting, starving, and purging to cope with unpleasant and overwhelming emotions and stressful situations.
