Lying on your left side: does it really help?

I've read that, since your stomach is on the left side of your body, lying on your left side would put it below your esophagus, discouraging acid from rising.

I've tried to do research on this but the conclusions are mixed and conflicting. So I thought I'd turn into good old anecdotal evidence. A few dozen people can't all be wrong, right?

Does this technique work for you? Smile

Gravity plays an important role in acid reflux. The esophagus enters the top of the stomach on the right side so when you lie on your left side, the acid pool is much lower than the opening of the esophagus.
Being upright makes reflux less likely to occur and lessens the time that acid is in contact with the delicate lining of the esophagus

I'm not sure about lying on your left hand side, but definitely sitting upright and not moving helps so it doesn't flare up.

Also I find it's best not to drink and let the whole area, mouth and nasal passage and stomach settle down. Sometimes it can take a few hours as it's happened to me when I thought I was fine, then I just had to sit still and take deep breaths to allow the whole system to relax and settle.

I do lay on my left side. However, I am propped up. I only sleep with pillows under my upper body, or from the middle torso and up. I never lay flat. Whenever, I lay flat then that is when I feel acid coming to the back of my throat.
