Waking Up the Middle of the Night and Unable to Sleep

Does anyone else wake up in the middle of the night and be unable to fall asleep again? I'm very sensitive to noise, so often I'm woken up by someone walking around upstairs, a stray car alarm, etc. When I do wake up it results in tossing and turning for up to an hour.

Yes, I frequently suffer from this issue. If I wake up for any reason during the night I have terrible trouble falling back asleep, if I can at all. I suffer from racing thoughts, and as soon as my mind engages it takes off on multiple tangents. What am I supposed to do tomorrow? What didn't I do today? How should that conversation with so-and-so have gone? Unfortunately when this happens I'm usually just better off getting up and getting some work done instead of laying in bed. It makes for a rough morning, though..

RE: Waking Up the Middle of the Night and Unable to Sleep

I struggle with this sometimes as well. In terms of being sensitive to sounds, I find it helps to wear ear plugs. I have also conditioned myself to sleep with a fan on because it drowns out all the other sounds. Once I'm awake I do have a hard time relaxing again so I usually read a book until I feel tired again. When I'm absolutely desperate I take a sleeping pill.

RE: Waking Up the Middle of the Night and Unable to Sleep

This happens to me once every couple of weeks. I will wake at 3 or 4 am and then can't fall back asleep. Like Ames1, I now don't try to fall back asleep. I get up and do something quiet. Usually I end up being really sleepy in about an hour and am able to sleep the rest of the night just fine. This seems to work well for me except on those occasions when I get up at 5:30 AM and then have the debate over whether it is worth crawling back into bed.

RE: Waking Up the Middle of the Night and Unable to Sleep

When I was younger, twenties and thirties, I had a problem going to sleep. Once asleep, I rarely awoke. Now that I am in my fifties, I can fall asleep instantly but I can never ever stay asleep.
Each and ever night I awake at 3:00 or 4:00 am. I try and try to return to sleep. I end up watching TV until I fall asleep again. I wonder if this is a part of the aging process.

RE: Waking Up the Middle of the Night and Unable to Sleep

I have gone through that a lot lately. I don't know why I end up waking up in the middle of the night. It's as if every little bit of noise chooses to happen when I am trying to sleep. It doesn't bother me at all when I am awake, but when I am sleep, there it is. By the time I get back to sleep, it is time to wake up. I try to avoid looking at the clock because it will make me realize that it's too close to the time that I have to wake up.

RE: Waking Up the Middle of the Night and Unable to Sleep

It happens to me often, especially after midnight prayer, then i find myself rolling in bed and counting the ceiling. It could be so frustrating that I will need to fix myself up with something which eventually might cause me to sleep. I do not know why this happens, but I am sure this is not peculiar to me.

RE: Waking Up the Middle of the Night and Unable to Sleep

This often happens to me when I try to sleep, for example if I have to get up at a specific time. So I often try to exhaust myself so I will sleep through having no energy. Sometimes it works, but often it doesn't. I'm so sensitive to noise and light around me and any small thing can disturb me, even if something falls onto the floor or if the wind blows. I've learned to live with it, but some nights are worse than others.

RE: Waking Up the Middle of the Night and Unable to Sleep

Before, I always experienced waking up around 2 or 3 am and find myself all pumped up and hyper. Thus, I will not be able to get back to sleep. I thought that it was only because of my bed, or the climate of my room, or something around my environment that affected how I slept. I also can't find a scientific explanation, though.

RE: Waking Up the Middle of the Night and Unable to Sleep

This has occurred to me a couple of times. However, I guess it's weather conditions were to blame. The heat and very dry air took their toll. Unfortunately, I didn't have a conditioner at that time, so I had to suffer with no other choice left.
