Depression Caused By Drugs

I get upset at times about some people's ignorance regarding depression.
There are people that don't believe it to be a real thing, or think that it's easy cured by changing your attitude.
I do believe depression a condition that can be inherited.
However, there are also people out there, such as myself, that have depression because of bad choices in their history.
When I was 20, I moved 700 miles away from home. Was a straight A student, never did drugs. Suddenly, I was 700 miles away from my family, and I had so much freedom. I found myself curious about ecstasy, and I tried it. Well, that trying it turned into about 60 pills in the next 6 months. Let me clear about something, though...I don't think ecstasy did this to me...I think what was passed off as ecstasy did this to me. I would say that about half of all of those times, what I got & took was NOT ecstasy. It's so easy to pass off speed, meth, asprin, WHATEVER as ecstasy...it's just a little pill. So, I don't know what all I took.
I was young and dumb. It happens.
So, anyway...what I am getting to is that drugs can effect your brain. It can damage the way seratonin, dopamine, and other things function. The doctors I have seen believe that my major depression is caused by brain damage due to the drug abuse. I haven't done drugs, other that what is prescribed, since.
I hope someday that my brain repairs itself.
I just wanted to share my story & offer a different take on depression for the doubters

RE: Depression Caused By Drugs

I’m sorry to hear how challenging things have been. I sincerelyhope you have forgiven yourself for your drug use. Holding onto any guilt andblame will only worsen the depression. [[span style="mso-spacerun:yes">[[/span]]Iappreciate you taking the time to write this and offer a different perspective.I can completely see how drugs can alter your brain chemistry. Addiction anddepression are two of the most difficult things to endure. You must be an incrediblystrong person.

RE: Depression Caused By Drugs

I'm sorry to hear this. My husband is a recovering addict/alcoholic and he struggles with depression as well. He has his very good days and his very bad days and it makes it so hard on him. He has sought counseling but the lady he seen did not seem very caring and seemed more about the money so he quit going. He works full time Monday-Friday so him starting counseling isn't easy for him to do because there is nothing open on the weekend of course. I wish I could help him but I can not. I'm so sorry for you and my husband and anyone struggling with the depression.
