Extreme GERD pain and losing control

I have had GERD for more than 10 years but I have never had the pain like I have had in the last 3 months. The first time I had it I was at home and after I had eaten, the pain came on so strong. It was so painful that I thought I was having a heart attack. I couldn't move. I was burping, passing gas and I finally started vomiting. I vomited everywhere. As soon as I could I called for an ambulance because I thought I was going to die. They took me to the hospital but told me that it was only the pain from the GERD. Besides the bill, I didn't find anything else out.

This most recently happened last week at work. It was embarrassing but I managed to get to the toilet without making too much of a show. My coworker recognized that I was having another episode and helped me out. I was very thankful.

Even with GERD, this doesn't seem normal. The pain and the reaction are just too intense so I think that this must be something more than GERD. Should I see some other form of specialist? This is in the back of my head all the time.

RE: Extreme GERD pain and losing control

That does sound like quite an unpleasant experience. These types of symptoms are why so many people think they are having an heart attack.

The only thing that I can suggest is to see your GI and explain the symptoms. I know that people with hiatal hernias often have difficulties swallowing foods. If you have not had an endoscopy recently, the doctor might suggest this to take a look at your lower esophageal sphincter to see if you have a hiatal hernia. The chances increase as we age so it would be worth getting checked out. Something that was minor before could be getting worse.

RE: Extreme GERD pain and losing control

I am having more difficulties swallowing lately! I choke more than I used to but I haven't had any pain when I swallowed. The timing was different. Still, that is interesting because the feeling was similar to when I have drank something and it went down the wrong pipe. It was horrible

Would this mean that I need a surgery to correct this?

RE: Extreme GERD pain and losing control

I am sure it would feel awful to have any feeling similar to choking.

Surgery would be a possibility but you would talk with your doctor about the options available. There may be possibilities out there that require no surgery. I do not know what options apply when.

Good Luck!
