Slippery elm for stomach inflammation/gastritis?

I have been reading across several forums about the benefits of slippery elm for gastritis but I wanted to know if anyone objective has had good experience with it. I seem to routinely get stomach infections so it seems like it would be a good medication. I have read so many claims about it treating just about everything that I am very skeptical. When someone claims that it can be used in a poultice, treats bronchitis, internal bleeding and stomach issues, I am wondering just how objective or gullible they are.

Anyone?

I can understand why people do get sucked in especially when the medications that they are taking have side effects or are not working. I am looking into slippery elm simply because I need an option to avoid the discomfort. I just wish it was less of a pain to find reliable information.

That is a common problem amongst many herbal remedies. It is hard to separate fact from fiction and some people believe the claims simply because they are an alternative to medications. I have a cousin who is a chiropractor who believes and promotes this sort of information. She has even sold books and people buy them up but I still remain the skeptic. I have not tried slippery elm but I support your skepticism. I would try it and make your own decision. It is expensive if you are using it all the time but it is not too bad to try.

If you do try it, please share your experiences, positive or negative.

RE: Slippery elm for stomach inflammation/gastritis?

vincenim, I have used slippery elm and I think that it has helped with gastrititis but I have only used it 3 times. The people selling it advertise that it has antiinflammatory properties but I think that it works in the stomach simply because it coats the stomach allowing the stomach to recover more easily (This is my equally uninformed opinion). I have not tried it for anything else because I have never had the need. You can get a bag for $10 so I would do as jeremee recommends and just try it.

justCarla, thanks for the response. I see that there are pills and powders. Which one did you take and how did you take it?

When I have used slippery elm, I took it mixed with water because I wanted to coat my stomach with it. I do not think the pill would do much if it is supposed to coat the stomach. I usually had it with 8oz of water two times per day. I hope this helps.

I have used Slippery Elm in the past, and it does have digestive benefits. However, it will depend on the type that you buy. What I mean is its always best to get it in the purest form possible. Also, for me I found the powder version to be disgusting. Sorry, it really tested my gag reflexes, so I started to take it in capsule form. Capsules can be just as effective because they do absorb well in the body. Word of caution though, you may feel a little stomach discomfort the first few days of using it, I know that I did, because my body had to adjust to the slippery elm.

It does help, thanks. I bought some at a health food store and will start trying it out.

RE: Slippery elm for stomach inflammation/gastritis?

Are you saying your stomach hurt after taking slippery elm. I took two yesterday and it made my stomach hurt. I thought about maybe just taking one and see what happens.
