eliminating mucas from reflux

I am taking the maximum dose of PPI that my GI is comfortable to prescribe and most reflux symptoms are controlled. The problem is that I still have a lot of mucus production. I have a throat that is ticklish so I am clearing my throat all the time. I am always bringing up thin mucus. It is really annoying.

Can someone please recommend something to reduce the mucas? It is driving me a little crazy.

RE: eliminating mucas from reflux

If you still have mucus, it means that there is likely still some irritation in the throat. If it is possible, see if your doctor can change your medications. That would be my first recommendation. If you are eliminating the mucus, it will probably result in more throat irritation. Has your gastroenterologist checked to see the reason for the reflux?

RE: eliminating mucas from reflux

I didn't want to hear that but thanks for letting me know. I have been fighting worsening GERD symptoms for quite a while. I had an endoscopy that showed my top sphincter was deformed. My GI said that if things got worse, we would have to look at other options. I have not had an appointment or let her know about the mucas because I was fine otherwise. I guess I have to go back. I really don't want surgery.

These surgeries are really quite common so I would not get too worried about it. Is there something that bothers you in particular? It might be worth talking to a surgeon and a councillor to overcome these fears.

RE: eliminating mucas from reflux

I am not fearful about the surgery. It is just that I have other health issues as well. I have heart problems so my risks for surgery are bigger. I am also a little older and that adds more risk. I was hoping that my symptoms would be mostly stable. I guess that is not the case.

Your concern is understood. Even still, you can get more information from talking to the surgeon about limiting the risks.
