options to relieve bloating when I lay down

I have avoided taking PPIs for almost one year because they make me agitated. Over the holidays, I wasn't as careful with my diet and irritated my stomach. It might have been food poisoning too but regardless I am now really uncomfortable with bloating and gas. The past four nights I have hardly slept. If I sit up in the chair I am alright but as soon as I lay down at all, I get the bloating and gas. I would really like to sleep so could use some help.

RE: options to relieve bloating when I lay down

There is always the option to use the wedge pillow or prop up your bed if you are fine when mostly upright. You could also try other medications for upset stomach. Something like Nexium or Pepcid would likely provide some relief. I am not sure if you have tried these options since it sounds like you have GERD for a few years at least. If this lasts, it probably makes sense to be checked for gastritis. You might have more than simple reflux from something you ate that was a little off.

RE: options to relieve bloating when I lay down

I have had mild GERD for 4 years but was fine based on diet changes. I learned the foods to avoid and have been mostly ok. I have never had to change how I sleep or how I eat so far. You are right that I probably had some food poisoning. I felt awful after a brunch last weekend and had diarrhea but the diarrhea went away and I have felt this way since. I have been on the Nexium for two days but I still have the same problem sleeping.

RE: options to relieve bloating when I lay down

If it is a some sort of food poisoning, it might take a week to get over. Any longer than that and I would go to the doctor. In the mean time, try eating earlier in the evening before bed so the stomach is not digesting when you are trying to sleep. You can also prop yourself up with pillows if moving the bed is too difficult. I have also set myself up on the couch a few times when laying down was not going to let me sleep.

I have heard that doctors recommend drinking hot, boiled water to flush the system when you have such ailments. This willl rid the body of many toxins in the nody.

Lately I have been having a bloated feeling at times and I take two alkaseltzers, which do make me feel better. Not sure if it would help you, but worth a try. Good luck.

Try Bean-O or Gas-X. Both will relieve you of gas and are natural. They are not known for having side effects.
