not one sleeping pill is working for me

I am so exhausted that I am feeling sick. My doctor has prescribed everything for me over time: Trazadone, Ambien, Sonata, Restoril, Seroquel and Lunesta. Nothing has worked and most of them have had horrible side effects. I have lost memory, hallucinated, had a feeling of being wired and acid reflux. I don't really want to try another medication but I need some way to sleep. Can someone help me?

Under managed insomnia can be very difficult so I feel for you. Please tell me about your general health and the specific insomnia symptoms that you experience. Stress, anxiety and pain are all common causes of insomnia. Overuse of stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine can also cause problems.

RE: not one sleeping pill is working for me

My only other health problem is that I have biploar disorder, but my doctor says that it is well managed. Besides that, there is no pain or anxiety. I have a little stress once in while and my sleep gets worse then. Even when I am not stressed at all, I still can't sleep. I only have a coffee in the morning and I don't smoke at all.

Okay, you might want to get another opinion about your bipolar disorder and whether it is managed well. I do not know enough about it, but to me that would be a valid cause for poor sleep. I also wanted to ask if you have racing thoughts that keep you awake. Many people with insomnia have this problem. Stopping racing thoughts is important if you are going to sleep.

RE: not one sleeping pill is working for me

I do have racing thoughts but that happens any time I am not doing something. Both the doctors I have had have told me to keep up with the medications because they were working for me. Do you think that the bipolar disorder could still be affecting my sleep?

RE: not one sleeping pill is working for me

Not being an expert in any way, I cannot say for certain. It just seems too much a coincidence. If your condition is well managed, it does not necessarily mean that everything about your mind is "normal". You may want to look for techniques for quieting the mind. Many cultures use meditation for this purpose. Whether it would work for you, I cannot be certain but since the medications are not working, this would seem a possible approach. If you do try meditation, give it time because it is a skill to be learned. You can do it whenever you are in bed and the racing thoughts are present.

Hi Wembnee

I agree with lizbethly about looking into techniques to quieten the mind. Meditation is one possible way, but you can also learn things like progressive muscle relaxation or deep breathing. But it is also important to look carefully into good sleep hygiene techniques and see if there is anything you have been doing which could contribute significantly to your sleep problems.
As a final note, Mindfulness based meditation is really fantastic for quietening the mind. Google it or look it up on amazon as you can get self-help books with CDs with talk-through meditations on them. I tried this for a few months and found it really successful in quietening my mind when I was going through a really tough period in my life.
Best of luck to you!

‚ÄčI take Natural Factors Stress-Relax Tranquil Sleep chewable tablets. They are tasty and they work quickly. Just make sure you have a full 8 hours when you take them. They make me knock out within 5 minutes. I have tried everything under the sun and also have the same condition you have. Try this!

That sounds like a serious health issue. I know when I read the information on sleeping pills, if the occurrence of insomnia persist over 7 days, then you should seek medical treatment. Perhaps you have chronic insomnia but I am not a doctor at all. I am just so sorry you must deal with such misery. I can't imagine feeling so incredibly tired due to lack of sleep.
