Do Hearing Aids reduce age-related Hearing Loss?

RE: Do Hearing Aids reduce age-related Hearing Loss?

My understanding is that hearing aids help to slow hearing loss because they ensure that signals  reach the brain. If the sound is not boosted and natural hearing is failing, then the nerves going from the ear to the brain weaken from lack of use. I hope the explanation helps.

Do Hearing Aids reduce age-related Hearing Loss?

My audiologist is trying to convince me that I should start wearing hearing aids because they will reduce future hearing loss. Is this true or is it just sales-talk?

I'm 76 in good health with reasonably good hearing - just some mild loss at 6k and 8k frequencies.

I don't know if it's important for you specifically.

In general, though, yes, it will help reduce damage later. It's kind of like wearing glasses....they help slow how much your eyesight degrade over time. Your ears won't have to strain as much to hear and you won't have to turn up the volume on things as loud (which would cause more damage), etc.

I have worn one hearing aid since I was six years old, and I finally had to go to two hearing aids when I was in my twenties. I am in my mid 30's now, and I know my hearing is so much worse then it was 10 years ago. So, yes it does slow it down, otherwise I would probably be deaf by now.
