I hope this helps you but my mother-in-law and I also have the same issues about not being calm enough to sleep. What we have found to work for us is to put on a DVD of a movie or series that we like but because its not an action movie the pace is relaxing. It has to be something you have watched often so you don't pay attention to it much. I find I like the first Harry Potter film. This effectively luls us and we are able to sleep.

Watching TV/movies really does help some people. Just make sure you set up a timer on your television set to automatically kick off at a set time, though. Otherwise, the noise and flickering of the light can disrupt you later in the night after you finally fall asleep. Then you may not be getting quality sleep at all.

I have the bad habit of reading on my phone before bed. I think a combination of the mental stimulation and brightness of the screen keeps me awake. It's a vicious cycle because I can't fall asleep because I'm on my phone, and I'm on my phone because I can't sleep.

I suffer from racing thoughts too, and it's really unpleasant. As silly as it sounds the best trick I've learned is to start following the plot of a movie in my head. With kids I watch a lot of animated movies, and those tend to work well, but any movie you have watched a hundred times should work. I just focus on "watching" the movie and it helps to mute the million other things making noise in my mind.

Over-stimulation before bedtime can have many root causes that you have to evaluate. It can develop into a poor habit and lead to all kinds of strange energy patterns throughout the day. One second you're in control of the vehicle you're driving, the next you are sure how you got from A to B and if you should be operating heavy machinery. It's important to take necessary precautions to ensure you a full night's sleep -- it isn't just about being able to have the most fulfilling day. You don't want to crash-and-burn...maybe even literally from my example.

Consider eating correctly all throughout the day rather than just before bedtime, drink plenty of water and meditate for small amounts of time throughout the day as well to keep your energy levels in balance. Meditation takes away pent up energy that may carry over into the night if it isn't released. For this reason weight-resistance yoga for strength and endurance mixed with typical yoga for flexibility are highly recommended. Your mind is barraged daily with past conditioning that over-stimulates it to your environment when you should really be at peace. That's the most fundamental concept to consider.

This is definitely true of films that are not fast-paced or full of action. Flicker rates are actually mathematically-considered in electronic engineering to keep your attention during commercials and films. The less action-packed and full of a story and musical score that demands your patience and attention, the easier it is to fall asleep. Action-packed entertainment will keep you awake in a trance you may find yourself stirring from and having to get up and turn off the screen.
