High blood sugar on prednisone???

I got some recent blood work results from my doctor. My RA results are apparently good but my blood sugar is very, very high, My family doctor said this is from the prednisone so I guess I have to stop the medication. I have not been told to stop the medication by my doctor and I am worried because my aunt had damage from high blood sugar and had to have her feet amputated. I do not want to risk this so I really want to stop taking it as soon as possible. The appointment with my rheumatologist is in 3 weeks and I do not want to wait that long with the such high blood sugar. Does anyone here think it is safe to stop the prednisone?

RE: High blood sugar on prednisone???

High blood sugar is a common side effect of prednisone, but whether you can stop or not is really up to to your doctor. Without the prednisone, the RA can damage your organs so you can have problems either way. I would suggest that unless you are transitioning to another medication that you wait for your appointment or at least ask you family doctor for his opinion. I know you might feel apprehensive but you do not want to make things worse by making incorrect decisions.

RE: High blood sugar on prednisone???

I can sympathize with your worries based on your experience with your aunt. It might help to know that it takes months and years to develop injury from high blood sugar so 3 weeks should not be a significant time to continue taking the medication. Once your rheumatologist sees you, you will likely be put on another medication and then you will have no further damage from the high blood sugar. If you play with your medications, you raise other risks so I would not suggest making any changes,

I don't know. I am still rather worried. I just wish my appointment was earlier. I think that I am thirstier than before because of the high blood sugar so I am always thinking about it. I am even having trouble sleeping at night.

You can seek help for your anxiety while you wait if it is overwhelming. Your doctor can prescribe something for that if you ask. Do you generally have problems with anxiety?

RE: High blood sugar on prednisone???

This isn't uncommon when taking a prescription medication for one problem to have it effect another. However, I agree with those who are telling you to talk to your doctor first. Prednisone isn't one of those drugs you can just stop taking cold turkey, there will be with draw symptoms. I know this because my father tried to get off it going cold turkey without consulting his physician first. Its best to taper it off then go down to none. Also, your doctor can prescribe another drug that might work just as effectively and not raise your blood sugar.

RE: High blood sugar on prednisone???

I am a very anxious person and that is what is making this so much worse, but I can't do anything about it. I don't want to take medications because I am already taking several. I will have to try to manage this by myself. Thanks for your knowledge.
