waking at night with rapid heartbeat

Hello, I am looking for some experiences about having GERD and rapid heartbeats. I was diagnosed with GERD and IBS 4 years ago and have had difficulties finding a medication that works for me. The problem that I have now is waking up with bad reflux and a very fast heartbeat. It usually takes me more than an hour to sleep after this happens. It is really awful. I know that GERD can look like heart problems but I have been checked and my heart is fine. I never have this problem during the day, only at night.

Does anyone else have the rapid pulse at night?

RE: waking at night with rapid heartbeat

I have had that feeling before when my GERD was uncontrolled but not night after night. I know how awful I felt so you must not be feeling well at all. When it happened, my husband decided to take me to the hospital because he was worried I might be having a heart problem. I did not but the experience certainly stayed with me.

All I can offer is that maybe your sleeping position at night is allowing more acid to move up your throat. Then the irritation happens that causes the heartbeat to be increased. That is why it might happen more at night.

I have not bought a wedge to sleep on yet. I guess that is the next step. Do they work? All I can imagine is that they are not very comfortable. I sleep on my side so this will take some getting used to.

The wedges do work once you get used to the change in sleeping position. I had to switch myself as I was someone who slept on my belly my whole life. Sometimes I still have a bad night's sleep but I generally get by.

Something else to keep in mind is eating too close to bedtime. I generally don't eat after 6 and I go to bed at 10 - 11. I wake up so hungry many times but at least I don't have the pain. I don't know if you have other health problems but you should also look at the following news item if you are taking PPIs.
