Excruciating hand pain

My day didn't start very good today. I was asleep and put pressure on my hand that jarred me awake at 6:30. It was so painful I made a noise and woke up my husband. I was crying for a few minutes because it hurt so bad. It was in the joints of the hand, not the fingers where I usually have pain. I was so stiff that I could not move my hand much at all. Has anyone such intense pain like this that wakes you up?

RE: Excruciating hand pain

I have had knee pain that woke me up when I moved in the night. It was rather painful and unpleasant. I also get very sore hands on occasion but they have never woke me up. Does this seem to be the start of a flare? I always take the prednisone if I get these types of pain.

RE: Excruciating hand pain

Wrist braces are the best thing when you have this happen. My RA has caused carpal tunnel like problems in both wrists so I have a pair. I wear them loosely when I am not awake and I have not had a problem while using them. You can also use hot water and the self heating patches to cut down the pain.

RE: Excruciating hand pain

My pain isn't in the wrist. It is in the main part of the hand in the middle. I don't think a wrist splint will work because even moving my fingers hurts so bad. I am only typing with my thumb and index finger on my right hand.

RE: Excruciating hand pain

If you have a medical supply store, it still could be worth a visit. They have a number of braces for people who have sprained fingers and thumbs. You might find something that could help.

Thank you. I have not been to one of these stores. I looked online and see that there are many braces to try. It would be nice if they had them at the store so I didn't have to weight for something to arrive in the post.

RE: Excruciating hand pain

It sounds like that could be carpal tunnel syndrome, and a wrist spling will support the whole area of the hand. Your doctor may be able to prescribe one for you. It certainly helps. I wore mine for several months, and eventually, the problem cleared itself. If there is no real heat at the site of the pain, it's more than likely carpal tunnel problems.
