Yes, I too learned the hard way about how GERD can get worse with an empty stomach. When I have been hungry and my stomach empty I have had some of the worse heartburn. It has been so bad that there were times when I was afraid I was actually having a heart attack that's how bad it could become, but then I remembered that it was because I hadn't eaten and the acid had built up. The GI specialist that I saw in the past told me this wasn't uncommon to happen when the stomach is empty. So I try to make sure that my stomach isn't empty. Fortunately this type of heartburn hasn't happened in awhile now. As for problems with a full stomach I have experience these as well on occasion, so I guess the best thing that one can do with GERD is try to find the right balance for their own body, with not keeping the stomach empty but not too full. A way to do this might be to talk to your doctor, they might have suggestions on what you can do such as smaller more frequent meals.
