GERD is worst when I have nothing in stomach

To manage my GERD I try not to have too much in my stomach at a time. I found that eating too much gives really bad reflux. This has worked alright for me but a few times I have found that when my stomach is empty my reflux is even worse. If I miss a meal, I will have the acid right underneath by Adam's Apple. I always thought that the GERD symptoms were caused by food so this was surprising.

RE: GERD is worst when I have nothing in stomach

An empty stomach is going to cause worse reflux. When you are hungry, a lot of stomach juice (read acid) is produced for the food that the stomach is expecting. Then when the stomach is growling, you can get that acid being pushed up your esophagus. Your stomach also has a clock so you should eat at consistent times to avoid having it starting to produce acid when nothing is going in. I would certainly not recommend letting your stomach ever get empty as part of your strategy for handling the disease.

I should have known that. Your explanation is not hard to understand. The main issue is that it is awfully difficult to get just the right amount when I eat meals.

I get the same problem with an empty stomach. I am always nibbling to avoid letting myself go empty.

Instead of worrying about keeping your stomach that empty, why not try eating fewer smaller meals. You can also nibble a bit all the time as was suggested. That would be a better way to prevent the empty stomach or the full stomach that lead to the reflux. It also means that you are not risking unhealthy weight loss by starving yourself.

RE: GERD is worst when I have nothing in stomach

Yes, I too learned the hard way about how GERD can get worse with an empty stomach. When I have been hungry and my stomach empty I have had some of the worse heartburn. It has been so bad that there were times when I was afraid I was actually having a heart attack that's how bad it could become, but then I remembered that it was because I hadn't eaten and the acid had built up. The GI specialist that I saw in the past told me this wasn't uncommon to happen when the stomach is empty. So I try to make sure that my stomach isn't empty. Fortunately this type of heartburn hasn't happened in awhile now. As for problems with a full stomach I have experience these as well on occasion, so I guess the best thing that one can do with GERD is try to find the right balance for their own body, with not keeping the stomach empty but not too full. A way to do this might be to talk to your doctor, they might have suggestions on what you can do such as smaller more frequent meals.

So far the weight loss has been positive. I was 40 lbs over weight but you are right that I can't keep it up. I see that the approach using fewer smaller meals is something that many people use. That is a smart approach now that I know it.
