Trouble swallowing liquids after Nissen

After 20 years with GERD, I had Nissen Fundoplication last year and I thought things would be better. It has been very negative. Since the surgery, drinking liquids is a major pain. I don't know how many times I have started choking because the liquids are so slow to get into the stomach. If I drink something and then eat something, the liquid backs up and make me choke. I also get pain many times when I swallow and many times when I drink I will hear bubbling and gurgling sounds. After all the years with GERD and now getting this I am very frustrated.

Has anyone managed to find a way around this?

RE: Trouble swallowing liquids after Nissen

Your symptoms can happen after the surgery but my understanding is that people who get this usually have it a decade or more after the surgery. That is miserable that you are getting it now. Unfortunately, I have not read about many people on the forum who have had the surgery yet. Have you talked to your doctor about this to get some options? You might also talk to a specialist who can analyze the swallowing more specifically to see what is not happening properly.

RE: Trouble swallowing liquids after Nissen

I talked with her (my GI) and all she did was order a Barium swallow to confirm whether everything was normal. The test didn't find a thing so now I have a symptom they cannot detect so they cannot help me. It is a real let down after being so uncomfortable all these years.

Have you considered the option of a second surgery to make adjustments? Do you know how much of your stomach was wrapped around the esophagus? Was it a full or partial fundoplication? If the wrap is too tight, they could probably relax it a bit to allow liquid to flow more easily. I don't know what is involved but it is probably worth asking.

RE: Trouble swallowing liquids after Nissen

I have no idea about this. I was told I was having a Nissen procedure and that is all. I went looking and what you say makes sense. I would gladly have another surgery if I can be not choking all the time. My GI never offered this at all as a solution so I don't know if it is done. Still thanks for the idea.

RE: Trouble swallowing liquids after Nissen

Hopefully you have found a satisfactory answer to your problem. I would like to suggest that you try drinking through a straw, to see if your swallowing is any better. Also take very small bites of food when you eat and chew your food longer. Good luck.
