Suggestions for Preventing Skin Infections Like Candidiasis When Breastfeeding?

My cousin's wife just had a bad breakout on her breasts. It was a yeast infection on her chest. She is a large chested woman and it was really hard to get rid of. She did get some cortizone cream from her doctor, but it just led to thin skin in the area. What are some ways to prevent this in the future?

A yeast infection on her breast? Interesting. I've never heard of that at all. :S

For starters, she should try to keep the area dry, though. Moisture can lead to areas where bacteria can breed.

RE: Suggestions for Preventing Skin Infections Like Candidiasis When Breastfeeding?

When my last child was born, I developed a very severe case of thrush. Thrush is Candida of your nipples, and women who are breastfeeding can develop it and it causes a lot of pain.

Was your cousin's wife breastfeeding at the time, or was this the actual skin on her breasts?

In any case, I will share with you what healed me when I dealt with this about a year ago.

I used Gentian Violet directly on my nipples, where my Candida was. Gentian Violet is a great first line of defense for any outbreak of yeast on the skin. Be very careful with it, though - it stains clothing! It is deep purple, so wear an old black t shirt if you apply it.

I had my OB call in a prescription for Dr. Jack Newman's All Purpose Nipple Ointment. You can google that to get the ingredient list, and learn of a way to mix up a less effective ointment at home if you do not have access to a compounding pharmacy. I don't want to post the recipe because of copyright infringement, but it should be the first thing that comes up if you google "Jack Newman ointment". He is a Canadian based doctor.

I washed the area twice daily with grapefruit seed extract diluted in water. Grapefruit seed extract is different from grape seed extract, so read labels carefully. You can take this internally, also, but it is very bitter and I feel that for a topical outbreak of yeast using it directly on the patches of skin that are affected will probably be most effective.

I also took a very high quality probiotic twice daily. These are so expensive, but I'm sure that without it, I would not have been able to kick it so quickly. The refrigerated section of the local health food store is the best place to look for probiotic with a really high PPM - parts per million - of active live cultures.

I only used the Gentian Violet for a week, because it is very drying. The ointment and grapefruit seed extract I used for two weeks. The probiotic I finished the bottle, but just because it was there.

After two weeks, all of my pain and symptoms were gone.

And a side note about the All Purpose Nipple Ointment - don't shy away from that if the yeast isn't affecting your nipples. This is some amazing stuff. My mom had a yeast infection in her outer ear that a month of prescription pills and creams couldn't kick. She started using the APNO out of desperation, and in less than two weeks, her ear was completely healed.
