Anyone have GERD with heart palpitations?

For the 4 months I have felt awful. My chest is very tight and breathing is uncomfortable. It is worst soon after eating. I have taken to going for a walk but that is even difficult now because even light walking pushes the acid up my throat. At the same time, my stomach is turning. It makes lots of noise. I am also very bloated and very uncomfortable which is why I was trying to walk.

Hours later if I sit or lay down, I get the palpitations. I get a few when I change position and then they seem to die down. Having them makes me a bit nervous. Does anyone else have these when laying or sitting?

RE: Anyone have GERD with heart palpitations?

Palpitations are common for people with reflux. They occur most frequently when the acid is irritating the most. That is why laying down or sitting is most likely to cause this. Are you on any medications for the reflux and have you seen a GI about this? Either you need to update your medications or start taking some to better manage the reflux.

Palpitations are very common when reflux is not treated or is poorly treated. Your vagus nerve is the one that causes it because of the irritation in the area. The nerve is located very close to the gastrointestinal tract

I am not on any medications right now. I will have to make an appointment with a doctor. The GERD is something new for me and I was trying to live with it but that doesn't seem like an option any more. What is the GI you are talking about? Is that a specialist?

Yes, a GI is the gastroenterologist - a doctor of the digestive system. Your doctor should be able to refer you to one who can see why you have the persistent reflux. With your reflux lasting this long a doctor's visit makes a lot of sense. There are a number of reasons why you could have reflux and there is no use suffering with it.

RE: Anyone have GERD with heart palpitations?

I agree with those who have already commented, this isn't unusual with GERD. I was diagnosed with the condition four years ago and before that experienced many different symptoms including palpitations. This would especially happen at night and would sometimes wake me up. Needless to say it scared me, to be honest there are times when it still may happen and it still scares me. However, both my primary care physician, and a gastrointestinal specialist told me this was one of the symptoms of GERD. My PCP did do an EKG on me just to insure that the heart was okay and it was.

This is the advice I can give you. First of all see a doctor about the GERD, many of us think we can handle it on our own, but this can be a serious condition if its not under control. Believe it or not this is a stress condition and can be off set by stress, if its not under control by diet and medication it can lead to damage. Also, another form of advice would be to have an EKG done, this is just a precautionary measure to insure that nothing is wrong with the heart. Believe me it will give you some reassurance to know the heart is okay and that the problem is all associated with GERD.

RE: Anyone have GERD with heart palpitations?

That's how I found out that I had GERD...I was getting awful palpitations and like everyone else who went through this, yes it scared me. My doctor did an EKG in her office and it wasn't my heart. She really didn't put me on any medications though, just told me to take acidophilus and probiotics. I haven't had palpitations in a long time since then, but they are truly frightening. I wish you luck though, please keep us updated! Smile

RE: Anyone have GERD with heart palpitations?

I have GERD but it is kept under control with my medications. I would agree with those who have responded. See your doctor to receive a prescription for the GERD, it is getting worse, it seems and based on other replies you should have medication for it, or it gets worse. Also I would agree that you should get an EKG, to see what condition your heart is in. Good luck, once you get on the medication you should be fine.
Take care.

This is super common! I get the same this especially after have a glass of wine or coffee... I've learned to adjust my eating and drinking to minimize these effects.
