Looking for natural NSAIDs alternatives

Hello, six weeks ago I was told by my doctor that I have degenerative osteoarthritis. I had been having back problems for quite some time but I thought it was because of a fall I had. I have started physiotherapy but it isn't going well. I can't handle much movement or I get too much pain. Because of other health problems I can't use NSAIDs so I am hoping to find some alternative supplements I can use.

I have read about glucosamine, omega 3's and devil's claw but would like other options.

RE: Looking for natural NSAIDs alternatives

Your omega-3 to omega-6 ratio is vital when it comes to inflammation and reducing inflammation will enable you to manage your osteoarthritis. An anti-inflammatory diet is the best natural treatment for inflammatory diseases like osteoarthritis. Food is medicine!

RE: Looking for natural NSAIDs alternatives

Sorry that you are joining the OA club. It is a miserable condition.
That is too bad about the NSAIDs. They are fairly effective. I would not expect to have any luck with glucosamine. From everything I read, they do nothing for osteoarthritis. Some people also recommend fish oil although I have not had any personal successes with it. Lastly, chicken cartilage has been found as helpful for rheumatoid arthritis. I have not seen anything where they tried the cartilage treatment on those with OA but if you have OA with inflammation, it would be worth trying.

The links to the studies I mentioned are:

RE: Looking for natural NSAIDs alternatives

People rightly recommend fish oil because it is rich in omega-3 and your omega-3 to omega-6 ratio needs to be in favour of omega-3 to prevent inflammation. Taking fish oil is not a miracle supplement, though, it will not negate a bad diet high in omega-6.

RE: Looking for natural NSAIDs alternatives

Thanks for the information! I want to have a few things to try. Do you know how long I should be trying each one before I give up on it? Is there anything else?

RE: Looking for natural NSAIDs alternatives

I have had OA for years. Recently I have started using Omega-3 Fish Oil capsules, and have had excellent results. Two to three a day reduces the inflammation in my back and thus reduces the pain. I am so glad that I started using it. I recommended them to a friend, suffering with the same proiblem, his pain is also being lessened. Good luck.

If you are going to try these, I would use one at a time with a constant dose and keep a journal about how you feel so that you can do the fairest comparison. Try each one for 3 weeks at a time. It may take a while but it is going to give more time to account for those bad days and good days that happen.

RE: Looking for natural NSAIDs alternatives

This is more complex than I thought about. You are very scientific. Thank you for helping with the way to do this.

RE: Looking for natural NSAIDs alternatives

I have a device that I wish to tell you about. I use this on a daily basis myself, its called the Miracle Trigger. When I was first diagnosed with OA I was in constant pain, my doctor had me on NSAIDS but I didn't want to become addicted to pain pills. I started taking supplements, but even these didn't help 100%. Then my sister who owns one of these devices herself bought one for me, and at first I was hesitant to use it, so she used it on my knee for me. I was amazed that within few days the chronic pain was gone. In fact, now that I have gotten use to how this device feels I use it myself every day regardless if I'm in pain as sort of a therapy to manage my pain. As I said before the device is called a miracle trigger, and its advertised as being able to help relieve stress, but it also help relieve nerve pain, which is actually the most common pain associated with OA. I don't know if you would have the same results that I have had with it, but any relief would be better then the pain you are no doubt experiencing right now unable to take pain pills.
