Is Chemotherapy or Radiation Safer over Time?

I was wondering which is healthier for you in the long run? I understand that both chemotherapy and radiation are dangerous to your body and often cause new cancers to crop up. Which is safer long or short term?

RE: Is Chemotherapy or Radiation Safer over Time?

It really depends on the type of cancer being treated. Some respond to radiation, while others need chemo, and some may even require combined treatment. In all cases, it's a question of the cure being at least as bad as the disease, as both treatments can have nasty side effects, and may in rare cases cause permanent organ or tissue damage. Each case is different, and a good oncologist will talk you through all the options and explain the risks involved.

A friend of mine has just finished chemotherapy and the doctors say she is cancer free but they still insist that she go through radiation treatments. Is this dangerous? If she's cancer free, why is it necessary for more treatment?

RE: Is Chemotherapy or Radiation Safer over Time?

It really depends which you fear more, mental issues or future cancer risks. Many people who get  chemotherapy get "chemo fog" that affects their cognitive abilities. Anything that affects my mind would worry me the most. Unfortunately, there are far too many situations in which you really do not have much choice due to the nature of the disease. As Sandra highlighted, the treatments are often almost as bad as the disease with the key difference being that untreated cancer often kills you.
