Alternative Medicine/Natural Remedies for Migraines?

What are some all natural techniques for migraines? Do you have any home recipes from your culture. I've heard about head massage, yoga, maybe some Chinese remedies. I am definitely interested in these types of remedies, as I am a holistic type person. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Massaging helps me when I have a migraine. The massage needs to be strong for it to be effective. Another natural remedy commonly used by migraine and headache sufferers is feverfew. Feverfew will reduce the pounding sensation caused by contracting blood vessels.

I have my boyfriend massage my head and I stretch on my exercise ball. I try to get my blood pumping and flowing so I like to get back massages too.

I read a recent study that 400 mg of vitamin B2 is able to lessen the frequency as well as migraine duration. Talk to your doctor because this dose will need a prescription.

RE: Alternative Medicine/Natural Remedies for Migraines?

I came here to find out what I can for my niece who suffers from serious migraines. I will often ask what she has taken and she always suggest that nothing she takes by way of conventional medication seems to help. She often has to stay away from work for days. Now I will recommend what has been mentioned here. They seem like practical ways to find some relief.

Certain foods can causemigraines, while others can prevent or even treat them. Coffee, for example, can sometimes knock out a migraine and foods rich in magnesium, calcium, complex carbohydrates, and fiber have been used to cure migraines. I read that that ginger—theordinary kitchen spice—may help prevent and treat migraines with none of theside-effects of drugs.

RE: Alternative Medicine/Natural Remedies for Migraines?

Sometimes, if I feel the migraine coming on, I'll drink strong, black coffee. The caffeine will ward off the headache. I also use over the counter things like Excedrin for Migraine and Bayer's Migraine formula. Both work if I catch it early enough.

I've also used meditation and self-hypnosis to control the pain. Imagine a point of light, and imagine that it is focused on the point where the migraine lives. This point of light can be used to dissipate the pain. It can be a stream of healing light penetrating the pain. Use whatever imagery that works for you. A sledge hammer if it helps!

Acupuncture can also help. I'm not an acupuncturist, so I can't elaborate on the how or where of this, but I've had it work for me and I highly recommend it!

RE: Alternative Medicine/Natural Remedies for Migraines?

I am not one who gets sick a lot, but boy, migraines always take the best of me. I can work through coughs and colds even fever but when migraine attacks me, I just cannot be productive. I am not a pill popper though so I try natural remedies to cure it.

Have you tried eating fruits when you have migraines? For me, this is one effective way to lessen the pain. Apple, watermelon, orange or avocado, especially when they are frozen, help in alleviating the pain for me. Another natural way is to massage the forehead and eyelid area. My mom massages me and I eventually sleep, when I wake up, the migraine is gone! Putting a cold compress also helps as it eases the pain in my forehead and eyes area.

I hope these tips help! Have a good day!

RE: Alternative Medicine/Natural Remedies for Migraines?

I myself is a migraine sufferer and makes me useless for hours or even for a day or two. In my case, there are some symptoms before my head starts aching (like blurry vision and or I see eye floaters ). I consider myself lucky when I see these symptoms coming.
Whenever migraine attacks, I eat lots of citrus fruits. Oranges and lemons work best for me, the scent of these fruits seem to calm my nerves and make the pain go away. I also drink brewed coffee every time I suffer from migraine. I don't add sugar and milk, I just drink it as is. I think coffee is a stronger combatant when it is pure. In addition, my mom also advised me to drink a lot of water because at times our brains get dehydrated which then leads to migraine (she said she heard it from a radio program). Aside from water, I also take Gatorade for hydration especially when I am outside and it is hot.
I think, staying hydrated and adding lots of fruits in our diet help in preventing frequent migraine recurrence.
