apple cider vinegar for reflux symptoms

Hi, I have relfux and it has been getting worse. I went to a GI doctor 4 months ago. He did lots of tests. He said I have a hiatal hernia. He prescribed 20 mg omeprazole but I didn't take it. I don't like medications that mess with the brain. This one can cause panic attacks and I just don't want that. So I am trying alternative remedies. A remedy I read alot about is apple cider vinegar so I have been trying it. It isn't doing anything for me. I would like to know what I am doing wrong. I take 4 ounces of water with 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar at night before bed. My reflux is the same so am I taking it at the wrong time? Do I need to drink it warm or cold? Do I need to add anything else to it? Thanks for helping.

RE: apple cider vinegar for reflux symptoms

I have read that about apple cider vinegar and I am not convinced it actually works. Lots of people seem to use it for every type of malady so I think it just one of those treatments that makes it into every home remedy. You may simply have proven this for yourself.

If you don't like that medication, you could ask for a different type of medication for the problem. There are many and you may have luck with something else.

RE: apple cider vinegar for reflux symptoms

The apple cider vinegar is useless for me after 3 day. I will find some other way to cure the problem. I don't wnat to take medications. I read that some people sip buttermilk so I started trying that today. I don't like the taste but it seems to be working. I will see if it works. There is also aloe vera and turmeric so I can try a few different ones.

RE: apple cider vinegar for reflux symptoms

I have tried it before and it did not work me at all. The only way that I have found that does work is to keep nibbling all day. This keeps the acid levels lower so I only have problems over night when the stomach is more empty.

I have used the apple cider vinegar and it worked well for me. You don't mix it with anything, as hard as it may be, you take two to three tablespoons straight. It does the trick.

I don't think apple cider vinegar is a remedy for Acid Reflux, your experience supports that. Try to eat a diet rich in nutrients, low in carbohydrates, anti-inflammatory foods, plenty of omega-3's and supplement with healthy bacteria/probiotics to promote digestive health.

RE: apple cider vinegar for reflux symptoms

For some Apple Cider vinegar does work for Acid Reflux, but apparently it doesn't work for everyone, including yourself. I understand your feelings about the medication. Believe me I felt the same way, after all you read these side effects and their enough to scare you. However, I had to ask myself what was worse the horrible attacks I was having with my Acid Reflux at that time (and they were bad) or taking a medication that may have some side effects (some of which are very rare if you research them on the Internet) and I had to decide to take the medication. The exact same one that was prescribed to you, and I am here to tell you that I experienced no real side effects from it. In fact, it helped me immensely to get my Acid Reflux under control, so much so that now I only take it when its only necessary and not on a daily basis.

Sometimes its more important to get the Acid Reflux under control, believe me I know then worry about what a drug may do. My advice do a little more research on the drug online. If you still don't want to take it, talk to your doctor about other alternatives. These days doctors aren't so closed minded about looking for alternatives to taking drugs. They might know of a diet that may help your Acid Reflux, but be prepared they still might suggest you take the medication. Look up other natural remedies but keep in mind like the Apple Cider Vinegar they may not work effectively, because sometime the Acid Reflux is too out of control for a natural remedy to help it effectively.

RE: apple cider vinegar for reflux symptoms

I've done it and, in truth, it did nothing for me except make my heartburn worse! I have not been traditionally diagnosed with GERD, but I have heartburn and reflux frequently. When it gets really bad, I take some powdered Ginger, about 1 - 2 tablespoons, and about 16 ounces of water. It burns going down but, for me, it has worked. I try to avoid Tums like the plague, as I hear (and have experiences) that one might become somewhat "addicted" as the stomach produces more acid.

RE: apple cider vinegar for reflux symptoms

I have also tried apple cider vinegar for acid reflux and sad to say, it's done nothing for me as well. Then again, I've only tried it for 3 or 4 days so maybe I didn't give it much time. My doctor suggested acidophilus several months ago but I haven't been faithful with taking that, either. I find night's comment about Tums interesting, because I use that quite often. Let's hope that I'm not getting addicted to them! :)

RE: apple cider vinegar for reflux symptoms

Maybe it works, but I don't know if I could get past the smell to take it regularly. It appears that there is enough evidence to suggest that it might not work for everyone, so I don't think that I'll even go down this road. Thanks for posting though.
