no sleep in days from RA

The past week has been awful. All the joints on my hands are swollen and it is the worst flare I have ever had. My feet hurt too but nothing like my hands. I haven't left my bedroom or showered in four days and my hubby is waiting on me for everything. I haven't slept much either so that is making everything worse. I feel so nauseous and I don't know what to do about this. I would really appreciate some suggestions!

RE: no sleep in days from RA

Ask your doctor about amitriptyline. It's a muscle relaxant that also helps you to sleep, although it's not a painkiller as such. When I've had a few broken nights through pain, I take one about 2 hours before bedtime, and I can get a good night's sleep. That helps me to cope better during the day, as broken nights just add to the chronic fatigue that comes with RA.

Are you taking pain medications at all? You did not mention that you are. If you aren't you really need to get something. If it isn't working phone your doctor and ask for a recommendation on what dose you can take of Tylenol or something similar. Also try getting a sleeping pill of sometime to help you get the rest.

RE: no sleep in days from RA

I am taking pain medications and something for the inflammation but they aren't working. I will call my doctor but I am not positive that I will get any recommendation from him. The sleeping pill is a good idea too.

RE: no sleep in days from RA

Take it from me that the sleeping pills don't work if you are in serious pain. Make sure you get something for the pain if you can. My pain was so bad one time that my doctor prescribed me a muscle relaxant and that knocked me out, but you can't use these very often. It will at least give you one night of reasonable rest to avoid feeling so sick

RE: no sleep in days from RA

Thanks for that information. I wasn't aware that those pills can help you sleep. A girlfriend recommended Benadryl and that is something that worked last night. Along with that I took 4 extra strength tylenol based on my doctors recommendation and that was enough to dull the pain enough to sleep. Today I feel so heavy headed but it was worth it.

RE: no sleep in days from RA

I am glad that you slept. You should get into your rheumatologist to see if they have other options as soon as you are comfortable enough to move.

RE: no sleep in days from RA

I honestly believe the medications prescribed for conditions like rheumatoid arthritis caused more harm than good. A healthy diet and lifestyle is often a much better solution. Eat plenty of anti-inflammatory foods and eliminate foods which caused inflammation like sugar, grains, and processed food in general.
