Ways to reduce self-consciousness

Self-consciousness plays a role in reinforcing social anxiety. If you suffer from social anxiety, you will feel self-conscious in social situations. Reducing self-consciousness is therefore a key part of overcoming social anxiety.

How can you reduce self-consciousness? Simply by making a conscious effort to focus externally, on what is going on around you, rather than internally on your feelings and thoughts.

RE: Ways to reduce self-consciousness

I used to have pretty bad social anxiety. I got really nervous when I had to meet new people or if I was with a group of people I was unfamiliar worth. I've almost completely gotten over it now though. Doing what you said is a great tip. I also made myself realize that, as cliche as it is, it was mostly in my head. The majority of people are a lot more accepting and easy to talk to you than think, and are not out to get you. It's a bad type of anxiety to have so it's vital to find a way to cope with it.

It is very bad because it can have such a debilitating effect on your life. In some cases it can make people a prisoner in their own home because they are scared to go outside and meet people.

You're right, and people are too occupied with their own problems to be concerned about you. The reality is that people don't care.

RE: Ways to reduce self-consciousness

Also using cognitive behavioral therapy techniques before you go to an anxiety-provoking event helps dramatically. For example, I will write out all my negative thoughts and concerns, then write more balanced and healthy thoughts. Instead of focusing on the negatives, I will focus on the healthy statements I wrote and it does calm me down.

RE: Ways to reduce self-consciousness

Eventually, you will reach a stage where the positive/rational thoughts are autmomatic. The irrational, anxiety-causing thoughts will become rarer and your confidence will grow. The time it takes to reach this stage will depend on how serious your SA is and the speed of your progress.

RE: Ways to reduce self-consciousness

I appreciate the tips and suggestions. I am trying to reduce my self consciousness to a level where I am comfortable with myself in every aspect and area. It's a long process but it can be done, and once I accomplish that, I'm sure that my anxiety will greatly reduce as well.

RE: Ways to reduce self-consciousness

Well I don't have any suggestions but I just want to say that I can relate. I feel so self conscious around strangers and even around some of my family members. My problem is my weight. I am obese and have a hard time losing weight due to a hormonal disorder that I have. So I always feel that people are staring and talking about me. They probably are in reality but I just try to brush it off. It's hard for sure.

RE: Ways to reduce self-consciousness

I'm very self conscious and always have been. I really did not know that self-consciousness had anything to do with social anxiety. I never thought much about it. I figured that my self-consciousness was due to my weight. Thank you for sharing this with us. I have gotten a little bit more confident over the years but I still feel like people are judging me and/or making fun of me when I have to walk in front of strangers..or even acquaintances sometimes. It does seem to make my anxiety higher. I need to do cognitive behavioral therapy. I wish I could find a good therapist.
