The difference between stress and depression

I always though that both of them were the same but recently found out that they weren't.

I was just wondering what the difference is between those two?

Any insight would be much appreciated.

RE: The difference between stress and depression

Hmm, these might help:

1. Stress is caused by your daily dealings with the world (overfatigue and pressure from work, school, home, etc.) while depression is cause by a traumatic event or biochemical imbalance.
2. Results of stress is mainly physical (sleeplessness, headache, chest pain, and the likes) while the effects of depression is mostly psychological (suicidal thoughts, pessimism, lack of motivation)
3. A person with stress can still go on with his daily life but a depressed person can go catatonic and too distracted to function.

RE: The difference between stress and depression

That's a pretty good explanation of the differences between stress and depression. I think the main thing to focus on is that on balance, stress is more likely to kill you than depression, as it can have a terrible effect on your heart and blood pressure. While both conditions can be treated, the sooner stress is dealt with, the less likelihood there is of permanent physical damage or death.

:) And here I was thinking that depression is more likely to cause death to a person. A lot of depressed people commit suicide. Stress can be a difficult condition but it is more manageable than depression. Well, I guess it depends from one person to another.

RE: The difference between stress and depression

Stress is not just sadness, usually stress affects more the physical body. Depression is a mental state, like a sadness you cannot explain.

RE: The difference between stress and depression

When I am having a depression episode, there is no anxiety or stress - there is nothing. I have no motivation, no energy, no feelings at all. Everything is just "bleh."

RE: The difference between stress and depression

I had times with depression and this was how I felt also. The medications for me, made it worse too so yes depression can be empty feelings.

RE: The difference between stress and depression

I'd also say if you have clinical or diagnosed depression, however you want to refer to it, it will last quite a bit longer than stress. When whatever is stressing you is done with the stress usually just leaves you. A depressive episodes tends to stick with you even if the situation is sorted out.

This is the way I would say it. When I am under stress I can still do my daily activities and interact etc. I'm just...stressed. When I was depressed I did not want to do absolutely anything or talk to absolutely anyone. I was a zombie.
