RE: What are the long term effects of GERD

It hasn't happened to me personally, but few years ago my doctor was concerned it could because I was having GERD attacks more then once a day. If GERD doesn't get under control through medication and diet there is a possibility that the lining of the esophagus can deteriorate because of the acid from the stomach coming into it. Fortunately this didn't happen to me, but my brother told me of someone he once worked with who also had serious GERD attacks who actually ended up an emergency case, because she couldn't breath, turned out the esophagus was closing due to damage. So yes the lining of the esophagus can deteriorate due to GERD, I'm not sure if this is the case with the stomach though.
