Has anyone had a goiter?

I was diagnosed with a multi-nodular goiter. I had it checked and it I don't have cancer, just an enlarged thyroid. They are giving me synthroid to shrink my thyroid. They say I may have to have my thyroid removed at some point. If you have had any experiences with a goiter, please share them.

I was diagnosed with exactly the same diagnosis. Was told I would have to take synthroid for the rest of my life. Mine was so bad that in addition to the large lump in my throat, my eyes had started bulging out. I took the synthroid for a month and decided I just didn't want to be on any medicine for the rest of my life. I started reading up on hypothyroidism and found out it was a condition caused by lack of iodine in the body. After doing extensive research on foods that replace the loss iodine, I no longer take any medicine and the goiter is completely gone.

RE: Has anyone had a goiter?

When I was first diagnosed with my hypothyroidism I went to a specialist and he felt my thyroid gland in my neck. He said it was 1.5 times the normal size, so I guess I had a goiter. You could not notice it though when looking at my neck or head. I started taking synthroid and soon afterwards my thyroid gland went back to normal. I have never had anyone check my gland again. Now that I think about it maybe they should.

RE: Has anyone had a goiter?

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease 10 years ago, which is hypothyroidism with goiter. I have been taking Levothyroxin since, and mine is pretty well under control. The secret is getting your medicine regulated properly. My doctor told me that since there was no cancer, I shouldn't have surgery. She said that even with surgery, a patient has to continue to take medication, so why bother? T he main problem I have now is the weight gain associated with hypothyroidism. It's so difficult to lose even 10 pounds, when you have this condition.

RE: Has anyone had a goiter?

I did about ten years back. My neck blew up like the stomach of a thrush. It was pretty unsightly. Thank God it wasn't permanent.

RE: Has anyone had a goiter?

I have enlarged thyroid and it is not cancerous. So my doctor said that it need not be removed. I don't have any issues with it. Please don't undergo any thyroid removal surgery if it is not really required. Because after undergoing the surgery one has to take thyroid supplements for a lifetime.
