Help For Visually Impaired

For those who are severely visually impaired it can be most helpful to allow these guests at your home some independence when serving a meal. Instruct the visitor where the food is on their plate according to the hands on the clock. An example would be peas and 2 o'clock, baked potato at 4 o'clock and chicken strips at 8 o'clock. Beverage might be at 12 o'clock and dessert of chocolate pie at 1PM. Designating the placement of their food allows them some freedom to enjoy your hospitality and feel like one of you while eating.

RE: Help For Visually Impaired

That's a good strategy, Goodselfme. As you say, it allows for independence. Another idea, if you regularly entertain blind or visually impaired guests is to ensure that all your furniture remains in the same place, particularly easily moveable stuff such as occasional tables and stools. That lessens the risk of bruised shins or stumbles during the visit.

In addition to SandraPiddock's suggestion, it would also be great for us to not use furniture with edges. This lessens the chances of a visually impaired person to get bruised when they make a mistake and hit a table or something. In case your furniture does have edges, you can simply buy protection covers in a hardware store.

RE: Help For Visually Impaired

Excellent comments and ideas to help visually impaired individuals to feel more secure. If they are visiting for a good while, helping them to pace off areas where inside doorways or doors are, would be a good thing as well.

RE: Help For Visually Impaired

Thanks so much for these ideas and suggestions, I find them very helpful. I have a friend who is severely vision impaired, and although I tend to visit at her home much more than she comes to mine, it's a good idea to remember this advice. Thanks again!
