Natural remedy for headaches

On another health forum, we were discussing drinking water and lemon juice and somebody - a personal trainer and nutritionist - said that taking the juice of half a lemon in a glass of water has an analgesic affect on headaches. Obviously it doesn't help with migraines, but for a normal tension headache, it's very effective.

After half an hour, take another glass of lemon juice and water if the headache isn't cured. You can also pare the rind and rub it on the temples. It's not known why this works, but it's very effective.

RE: Natural remedy for headaches

That's a great idea. I am totally for trying it. Seems like a natural way to help the pain as well. I will have to let you know if it works for me the next time I get a headache. Thank you for sharing.

RE: Natural remedy for headaches

Lots of people including myself, have found that blowing oxygen gently to your brain, giving it more oxygen, works to relieve headaches. Hold your nose, if you need to and blow like a blowfish gently, three and four times. Stop, and repeat for three times for four blows or so each time. The headache usually leaves, as the brain takes in the oxygen. It works. I do not take pills for headaches. Cheers.

RE: Natural remedy for headaches

That's another great tip Artistry. Sometimes I get so desperate when I have headaches. I'll do anything to get the pain to go away. Thank you for sharing.

I've done this before. It doesn't work every time, but especially if it's a headache brought on by a cold and my head just feels congested and....like there's a whole bunch of pressure on it....then it can really help to just force oxygen in. I don't know if that's what it's actually doing or maybe if I'm just relieving some of the pressure, but it feels nice after.

RE: Natural remedy for headaches

I would really like to see the science behind this. Many times people attribute relief to something that doesn't actually help. They often get better on their own and then assume it was something they did. I had a land lady in college whose friend wanted to treat my headache with Reiki (a highly questionable energy channeling technique). This friend of my land lady tried very hard to convince me that my headache was better after the "treatment". I have been a skeptic ever since.

RE: Natural remedy for headaches

Annmagic, there is no one who has explained any theory behind how the extra air to your brain relieves the headache, maybe a doctor could tell you. But for me and a number of people who have shared the information with me, it works very well. I am grateful for the knowledge, because I detest taking pain medications, as I know they are doing something negative to my body, even as they stop the pain. Bridgetg, you are very welcome. Pass it on. Take care. Cheers.

I don't think the science is necessary if it's a natural treatment rather than a drug. Does it really matter how the headache got better, as long as it did? Lemon juice in water is not going to produce any side effects - unless you happen to be allergic to lemons, in which case you'd keep well away. And I've heard the one about aerating the brain - from several people who have used the technique several times successfully. That kind of knocks out the 'coincidence' theory.

I'm with you on the Reiki, but then I wouldn't class that as a 'natural' treatment. A friend tried to treat my RA with it, and although she said she could feel it working, I couldn't feel anything, so like you, I have my doubts about that one/

...Sandra, thanks for providing some evidence from others, that extra oxygen to the brain, helps to get rid of headaches. Very much appreciate your comment. Cheers.

RE: Natural remedy for headaches

I would still like to see the science but I am glad that some people find that the approach works. Having seen the placebo effect in action I know how powerful it can be so I always look for the hard science proving the point. For me, I often get headaches from not keeping myself properly hydrated so I am fairly certain that getting extra oxygen wouldn't help. My point is that headaches can be caused by many causes so they would likely need different treatments to resolve the pain.
