Hemiplegic Migraines

Several years ago, I sufferred from stroke-like symtoms. I had the facial droop, half of my body went completely numb, my head hurt worse than ever before, I could hear, but when I tried to respond, nothing came out of my mouth. It was very scarey. So scarey, in fact, that my co-workers called an ambulance and I ended up going to the emergency room.
At the hospital, they did a CT scan of my brain, and gave me Benedryl and Compazine through an IV.
About 30-45 minutes later, I felt a lot better. I had full movement of my body, I could speak just fine, and my head no longer hurt so badly.
THe ER doctor determined that I had a hemiplegic migraine. (Thank goodness it was not a stroke!) The diagnosis was made based on the fact that the Benedryl and Compazine made me feel better. Really, it was the Benedryl that seemed to do the trick, the Compazine was just to help keep me from getting sick to my stomach from the Benedryl being administered through an IV. The nurse told me that they weren't sure why, but Benedryl seemed to help relieve migraine pain.

RE: Hemiplegic Migraines

That sounds awful. From your description, I am guessing that you haven't had any subsequent symptoms. Was this the only time you had this sort of problem or do you get other migraines at times?

I have had them at other times, but because I knew what they were. it wasn't nearly as scary for me. There are times when, towards the end of these, I start to shake, almost seizure-like, but that hasn't happened in a long time...thank goodness. The hemiplegic migraines I get are the worst migraines I experience. I do get more minor migraines, but they don't last too long, and are much easier for me to deal with..a lot less scary for my kids as well. I can normally tell when one is coming, so I just take a Benedryl and go lie in my bed and try to nap.
The weirde thing about the hemplegic migraines I get is that my older brother also gets them. To our knowledge, no one else in our family gets them at all. We live over 500 miles apart, and don't talk too often, so it was really odd to find that we both get them and they started around the same time for both of us.

With those types of symptoms, it is good that it isn't regular. The effects could be very debilitating. If both you and your brother have it, it sounds like it has a genetic component. Interesting.

It does sound like a genetic component. Maybe this link will have some information on it.

Thank you. I have thought about the posibility that it could be genetic, but not too seriously. There are many things that my brother and I both seem to go through, often simulataneously when it comes to health issues, and many of them, we don't know of any other family members going through. So, I often discount the genetic posibility.
I will definately visit the link that you have listed. Maybe it will give me some information that I was unaware of before.
