Food Imports and Our Health

​I was just reading recent news and it looks like food recalls are just going up and up. In Canada they increased 14% from 2010 to 2011.

In the US, the FDA was badly criticized this summer for failing to protect the food supply.

I find the whole trend very disturbing. If they can't protect our food supply what the heck are they doing? I don't know if it is cheap food imports or cuts to government funding but this is ridiculous.

Am I the only one who thinks that our government should be restricting imports from countries that can't keep the food safe?

I completely agree with you. Everyday you either read about it or hear it on the news about another product recall. I've never seen so many in such a short time frame. It seems like vegetables are being recalled the most lately. Lately I've been going to the Farmer's Market in my area on the weekends. Everything is local and organically grown.

I wouldn't even trust the farmer's market. I always wonder how well regulated they are. All it takes is a sloppy farmer and you have fecal material and E. Coli in with your nice organic carrots. A few months ago I went to buy garlic at a farmer's market and I asked where the garlic came from. He said it was locally grown but then I saw on the bag that it was another product of China. With all their pollution, that is the last thing I need. I was being lied to and sold an inferior unhealthy product at the same time.

Needless to say, he got a piece of my mind!

I agree as well, and this is a topic that concerns me. I recently bought some frozen broccoli in a health food store (similar to a small Whole Foods) and the manager said it was a good choice - the company was one of the few that actually grew their vegetables in the US. He motioned his hand around the store and said almost everything else was from China. Apparently the law only requires food manufacturers to disclose where most food was processed or packaged, not where it was grown. This is particularly true for processed foods with multiple ingredients. I feel that as a consumer, I have the right to know where my food comes from and our government isn't willing to take charge. Of course they are even willing to allow companies to hide the fact our foods are genetically modified, deciding that we should not care.

I think the time has come for me to start my own garden :)

A garden is always a good idea. I have had mine for 3 years, but so far I have only had luck with tomatoes and potatoes. Peppers, peas, beans and carrots have all turned out poorly, but I still try. My grapes grow quite nicely however, but they came with the house so I make no claim to their success. It might help if I wasn't fully employed and better able to look after the garden.

I just get so mad because we are largely dependent on the food system and yet our regulators don't really protect us from bad food nearly as well as they should.

The problem with this is that people nowadays are more concerned of the profits than safety and health. As long as they're not the ones consuming or who's life/health is being put in danger, they don't give a d#mn. :/ I remembered those Chicken Eggs with Salmonella. O.o I didn't know back then that it was possible for those bacterium to penetrate the chicken egg hard shell, and survive within the egg yolk.. :/

What bothers me most is that almost everything can be copied or an imitation is out in the market. You can't trust just any department store, even reputable ones nowadays. :( And a number of items in the market are mostly China made.

It certainly does seem to be the case. Too much focus on profit by businesses at any expense and governments that are complicit by not setting managing the quality standards that are laid out in law simply makes for a problem waiting to happen. Unfortunately considerable resources will be wasted in recalls, lives may be lost but it will likely not change anything. I don't have much confidence in our officials to do the right thing at this stage.

I agree. The problem is that the tainted food isn't just coming from other countries. In my opinion, the government should be conducting tests on all food products before they are allowed to be put onto the shelves in the stores for mass consumption. To many, this would porbably seem ridiculous and a waste of time, but I think that it is the only truly feesible way to make sure that the food we eat is safe.

This is a concerning trend. This is the reason why I make the following choices:
-Grow (most) of my own vegetables. This way I know exactly where they came from and exactly what went in to them
-Buy meat from a local, well known and established organic farm
-Buy fresh eggs from a friend who keeps chickens free range and does not use any type of chemicals to help them grow.

Our drinking water is also a source of concern when trying to preserve our health. Consider the following:

Research has discovered that the typical tabletop / faucet devices we use to filter our tap water with a carbon block filter does NOT take out flouride, pesticides nor chlorine which are toxic and, therefore, make us ill.

As for the devices that use reverse osmosis as a water distiller, these were originally made for large manufacturing processes and then switched to devices to purify drinking water in the home.

But it is important to note that there is another side to this process. Water processed in this manner strips our bodies of minerals which keeps us healthy. It causes us to literally urinate healthy minerals that should remain in our bodies.

Filters and reverse osmosis are not creating healthy water if they strip out minerals. It is important to find a local fresh water spring or an artesian well to ensure the water contains the minerals we need.

Unfortunately, this is difficult to do. If you have a well on your land, or know someone who does, then you are extremely lucky.

Most states have state parks with natural springs but these springs do not usually recommend the swimming sites or fishing streams as a drinking water source. Be sure to ask before you attempt to collect water at any state park.
