reduced my BP, still need medications?

Two months ago I was told I had HBP. I took the script but never filled it. Instead I reduced the salt in my diet and started walking. Now my BP is 145/92 which is far better than it started at, 163/101. My question is twofold. How long does it take for diet and exercise to reduce BP? Secondly, do I still need to be on the blood pressure medications?

RE: reduced my BP, still need medications?

First, good job in making the lifestyle changes. That is something few people ever do. As for your current BP, it is still a little bit high. YOu could try working at it to get it down further on your own, but may still find yourself in the "high but normal" range. You might want to talk to your doctor to see what he thinks.

RE: reduced my BP, still need medications?

Thank you. I am really hoping to eliminate the HBP with lifestyle changes. I dislike taking medications and I am very sensitive to them. I was also not keen on visiting my GP for assistance. She will probably scold me for not taking the medications.

RE: reduced my BP, still need medications?

I never worry what my doc thinks of me. If I can fix the problem my way, I am going to do it. The doctors sometimes just hand out drugs to most people because thats all people want. They don't want to do the hard stuff.

You might be surprised what your doctor says. She might be very satisfied with your personal progress. As was just mentioned, the doctors too often prescribe because patients aren't going to do what they should to lower their blood pressure.

I would say keep taking the Blood Pressure Medications for right now.Sometimes it takes more than diet to lower that Blood Pressure.
I think its because of the Angiotinsin 11 hormone that our liver produces which cause the arteries to Narrow.Without taking blood Pressure Medicines, your Blood Pressure could sky rocket.I eat a healthy diet and was diagnosed with High Blood Pressure.I refused to take Medications saying that if my Blood pressure was high then it could come down on its own.Sadly that wasn't the case.I had developed Pulmonary Edema which caused my heart to stop beating.I went into a Cardiac-Arrest and had to be admitted to the hospital. Now this may have been prevented if I had of just let the Doctor write me a prescription for some High Blood Pressure Medicine. You better believe the next time I was told my blood Pressure was high I was begging for that high Blood Pressure Medicine. The reason why I didn't want to take that high Blood Pressure Medicine was because I heard it had Rat poison in it.The fancy name for Rat Poison is fluoride. To my surprise that isn't an ingredient in any of my High Blood pressure Medicines,I guess its because Fluoride can run blood pressure up.I better watch out when I brush my teeth then. The tooth paste has Fluoride in it.

RE: reduced my BP, still need medications?

Well, you still have to take pills. Your blood pressure is not healthy. I understand that getting to 120/80 would be super hard If not impossible... but you have to take pills in order to keep your BP low.
