For about 4 years I have had very bad lower back pain. Different doctors all thought I had sciatica so they had me on medications for that. The medications never really worked that well. I have been unemployed because of the pain and because I can barely walk. I have to shuffle along because normal walking causes really bad pain. I used to be an avid football and squash player but that is largely over.

I went to my doctor this time round and he decided to look again. He got me another xray and this time, he says I have OA in my spine and that it is advanced. He says I will likely have OA elswhere also. I am so frustrated with having the wrong diagnosis so long and I hope this one is correct. He saw my disbelief and offered to refer me to another doctor for second opinion.

Can anyone tell me how this OA may progress. Am I going to be spending the next years in bed on my back?

I am not sure if it is the medication or if the medication isn[[sq]]t working well. What happens is that I wake up in the morning at 6:30, but in 2 hours I have to nap. I can[[sq]]t even keep my eyes open. I will sleep for an hour and then I am fine for another 2 or 3 hours. Then I have to nap again for an hour. This happens 3 or 4 times per day. Then I sleep 6 or 7 hours and wake up the next day. I am taking Humira.

Does anyone know if this is what Humira does?

After 2 years with bowel problems I was finally diagnosed with IBS-D early last year. Since my diagnosis I have worked to change my diet and most of my symptoms have been managed. That is until I got a stomach bug 3 weeks ago. It only took me a week to recover from the flu but the diarrhea just won[[sq]]t quit. I can[[sq]]t seem to get control of it again with my diet and it is very hard on my system. I am feeling so fatigued because of this.

Last week I went to GI and he had some of my stool tested. He said the tests didn[[sq]]t find anything so the diarrhea should be easing. The problem is that it is not and I am so raw it is veyr painful. I am worried if this is going to stay this way. Has anyone else with IBS-D had lingering effects after a flu?

If you have been diagnosed hypothyroid, but are not getting enough replacement medication or the wrong combination you could become depressed, also obviously if your condition has not been recognized.

Chronic fatigue, dry skin, sleep disturbances and weight gain are all symptoms of an inactive or underactive thyroid gland. In the UK, the range of blood results considered [[sq]]normal[[sq]] is wider than that considered normal in other parts of the world. Our doctors now refuse to prescribe natural dessicated thyroid which I thrived on as a child, but many now consider levothyroxine on its own to be adequate. It is only one component of the thyroid hormone and may not be adequate for you. Get a referral to an endocrinologist and a full range of blood tests.

I have been hypothyroid since I was a child but none of the many GP[[sq]]s I have had (many house moves due to work!) ever told me that I could become seriously depressed if my dose was inadequate. Due to one incompetent GP in London who cut my dose but did no blood tests afterwards. This was the start of the depression. I am now taking liothyronine (T3) in addition to an increased dose of levothyroxine (T4) and still experimenting with the right time of day to take it. Blood tests do not tell the whole story. I am also taking an antidepressant and trying to get access to [[sq]]talking therapies[[sq]] to help beat the depression.

Depression can take years to recover completely and it depends very much if you have a stable home life and job. I split with my husband because he could not live with my depression and have had all the pain and stress of a divorce on top of everything else and still face having to sell my home and a move into a much smaller place, where I probably won[[sq]]t have a garden or be able to have pets which will be a further impact on my mental state. I am retired now, but could not work since my husband left and have had to manage on benefits which are not generous for a single person, despite publicity to the contrary.

This is a technique that helps me personally. Let me start off by saying I have horrible, horrible insomnia. I have tried many things for it, currently I take Seroquil, which honestly doesn[[sq]]t effect me too much.

Anyways, on to the technique. I think of it as [[dq]]reverse blinking[[dq]]. Close your eyes, and every few seconds open your eyes only long enough to focus on an object for a second or two, then close them again. Keep doing this. What will happen to me after doing this a few times is that my eyelids will become so heavy that it will become painful for me to keep doing it, and I will just want to fall asleep. This is usually the last thing I[[sq]]ll remember doing at night when I wake up.

How or why this works? I couldn[[sq]]t tell you. But it works for me and even prescription sleeping pills don[[sq]]t most of the time. I think it[[sq]]s worth a try for everyone!

hello could use some help for pain

3 years ago i started getting pain in my left big toe. the doctors thought it was gout but when they tested they said no. i had an xray that saw nothing and so they just put me on mobic for the pain. that worked for a while but in the last 5-6 months the pain is just too much. i don[[sq]]t know if the mobic wore off and the doctor never arranged for no follow up visit. so i just went back last week and got more xrays. this time they say i have bone spurs. they said should get them ground down or maybe i will be better if i loose weight.

i am not that old at 36 but i am a bit heavy. i am trying to lose some weight but i am not sure that will help. i think the pain is going to stay anyways.

has anyone had bone spurs removed? do they come back? is this surgery a good idea for someone younger?
