Foods that can help you sleep - member87683  - 03-21-2013 12:16 PM

What foods should we consider eating if we want to sleep better?

Bananas, honey, eggs, nuts and milk-All of these have tryptophan which is a substance that promotes sleep.

Crackers, bread and cheese-Carbohydrate rich foods also increase tryptophan in the blood so bit of these before sleeping is good for sleep. Don't eat too much though because too much food will make your digestive system work harder. this makes your sleep restless.

Good list trishgl,

good point as well that you don't want to make your body work too hard before trying to sleep. I think it's more about what not to eat than what to eat before bed. You definitely don't want to load up on sugars and starches that will keep your mind and body active until you crash for a hard morning. If your diet is on-track in the first place with plenty of protein-rich green vegetables and lots of water than you will get the benefits of a full night's sleep no problem. It's usually a bad eating habit that's the culprit, so while a specific food may help you sleep, nothing is better than taking action to being healthy every step of the way. I do like your list again however; never of course forget the power of turkey!

Very interesting. I had never considered that food choices could affect how I sleep (or rather don't sleep). I mean, I obviously avoid caffeine and sugar before bed, but I definitely never gave thought to foods that could help me sleep.

You forgot Turkey... that also has tryptophan. That is why we are all so ready to roll over and go to sleep after a holiday dinner. Turkey is really the only thing that makes me drowsy, but it won't put me to sleep. Sometimes I just have to crash.

Thank you for sharing this! I never thought that bananas, honey, eggs and nuts can really help to get some sleep. Because there's an article I red that bananas are good every morning 'cause it will made your body energized...
