Although the dangers of lead exposure have been known since ancient times, modern society is still affected by lead poisoning. The costs to society are immense and certain members of society pay the highest costs. However, we all inevitably suffer from costs of lead poisoning.
The “placebo effect” has long been associated with a positive personal belief in the benefits of a fake drug or treatment. However, research in recent years has shown that the benefits of placebos are real and that they don’t simply arise from false hope. This means that placebos represent a more important part of the treatment process than was once thought.
Although we sometimes take the food system for granted because it generally does an acceptable job of protecting us from food contamination, the sheer complexity of the food system means that we must be aware of the ways in which it can fail.
